Now, just when you're starting to feel that you've poker mastered this bit you're going to find yourself suddenly exposed to a game of Lowball, Worst Hand or Misere Poker. Here, the principle is that the worst hand, i.e. the lowest hand, wins. There is some dispute over what the lowest possible hand at poker really is. However, the ranking which is generally accepted, and which we will use throughout this book, is this (lowest up): 5.4, 3, 2, A (the 'wheel' or 'bicycle') 6, 4, 3,2, A 6, 5, 3, 2, A 6.5, 4, 2, A 6,5, 4, 3, A 6, 5,4, 3, 2 7,4,3,2,A 7, 5, 3, 2, A etc. Flushes do not count (i.e. "there is no penalty if all your cards are hearts). Note that hands are compared from the highest card downwards, so that, e.g. 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, beats 8, 7, 3, 2, A or 9, 4, 3, 2, A. A pair of Aces is lower than a pair of twos. The dispute arises because some schools maintain that 5, 4, 3, 2, A is a straight and cannot be considered a low hand. Such schools also penalise flushes. It is a good safeguard to establish 'house rules' before embarking on a game of lowball. HIGH-LOW The issue becomes somewhat confused when play switches to 'high-low'. This is a game where players are aiming for either a high or a low hand, and in games played with more than five cards per person it is possible to have both the highest and the lowest hand in one set of cards. Here the two schools above agree and accept that the normal rules apply for the high hand, and that the best low hand possible is 6, 4, 3, 2, A. (5, 4, 3, 2, A counts as a straight and flushes count as flushes and will probably contest the high pot.) 22 However at this point, just when we thought it was all sorted out, a third school steps in to maintain that Aces can't be both high and low, that they should only be considered high and the lowest possible hand is 7, 5, 4, 3, 2 and a pair of twos is lower than a pair of Aces. This is an unusual ruling and may never be encountered, but again, check it out before you begin. The declaration If you are playing a free online casino game of high-low poker the moment comes when you have to declare which pot you are competing for. This can be done in a number of ways. 1 The cards speak for themselves - the hands are revealed and the lowest one wins the low, and the highest, the high. This method robs the game of the extra element of skill and/or double-guessing that makes it so much fun. Everyone knows the best hand doesn't always win at poker and taking a chance of 'stealing' a pot is part of the fun of high-low. 2 The last person to raise the bet nominates verbally which pot he is competing for, and the players to his left announce their decision in turn. The last round of betting sometimes becomes not so much an expression of confidence in your hand, but a jockeying for position. There are advantages in speaking first, and definite advantages in speaking last. Sometimes a pot will fall right into your lap when, say, the preceding players all nominate 'high' and you scoop the low on a pair of tens. 3 Players conceal different coloured chips in their hands (say, red for high and white for low, or red for high and nothing for low), and reveal them simultaneously. (Make sure everyone has only one hand on the table!) You may have formed an opinion about the other players' hands by noting how many cards they have drawn and how they are betting, but you are forced to make your own declaration with reference to your cards, not to others' decisions. In some games (usually those with wild cards or more than five cards in a hand) it is possible for a person to declare both high and low. With the first two methods of declar- Play Poker ation above this is straightforward. If you are using the third method this player should conceal a red and a white chip in his hand, or perhaps one of a completely different colour. It is held in some schools that a player declaring high and low must actually win both to take the pot - if not he is disqualified and online slots player. We play that he cannot lose on either the high or the low. Since tied hands are resolved quite happily in most games by splitting the pot, it seems logical to us that this should be permitted in high-low, with the declarer sharing half the pot he has tied in with the other player. Establish your own convention on this point before you begin a high-low poker game.
